On July 1, 1975, the Irvine Police Department was formed with 41 sworn police officers. From the inception of their department there has been a philosophy of “community service based policing”. In 1993, thanks to the work of members of the Irvine Police Department, the city was first recognized as the “Safest City in America.” Since then, Irvine has remained in the top ten safest cities in the United States, and has been named a “Safest City in America” for the past 13 years straight.
Today, the city of Irvine includes the annexation of the former El Toro Marine Base, as well as land in the northern part of the city, for a total of almost 79 square miles. This makes Irvine the largest land mass city in Orange County. The Irvine Police Department has over 230 sworn members who are committed to community based policing.
As the city continues to grow, the men and women of the Irvine Police Association are prepared to grow and adapt with it. The association has over 200 members committed to placing a high value on the relationship we have with our community that we protect and serve with pride.
